Scooter more your style?
To ride a scooter in Quebec, you must be at least 14 years old and hold a class 6D driver’s licence. You’re also required to register your vehicle, wear a helmet that complies with manufacturing standards and obey the speed limit for this type of moped (70 km/h). However, if you’re over 16, you can ride a scooter if you have one of the following driver’s licences:
- Motorcycle licence: Classes 6A, 6B, 6C
- Passenger vehicle driver’s licence: Class 5
- Probationary licence for any other class, except Class 8 (farm tractors)

Best practices for motorcyclists :
Once winter’s in the rear-view mirror, out come the bikes! Here are some tips to help you stay safe before you take to the open road again.
Choose ahead of time
It’s a good idea to plan your itinerary before you hit the road and there are lots of resources, including websites, tourist guides and even motorcycling forums, that can help. They can give you an idea of distances and pit stops, and most importantly, help you determine if your skill level is suitable for the route you want to take.
Gear up
Motorcycling requires very special clothing and equipment. Essentials include a helmet, vest, long pants, boots and gloves to protect from the wind, absorb shock and reduce injury in the event of an accident. Other useful items include a back-up battery, small headlights and a first-aid kit.
Get your bike inspected
Be sure to stop by the auto shop for an inspection. It will save you a lot of stress on the road, especially if you’re planning a long trip.
Check the weather
Before you hit the road be sure to check the forecast to make sure conditions are right and to prepare for any unexpected turns in the weather!
Pack well
Choose your baggage based on how far you’re planning to travel, how long you’ll be gone and where you’re headed. That way, you’ll have everything you need in case of a break down and you’ll have an easier ride. Distribute your things so your bike is always balanced. There are lots of options, including motorcycle cases, saddle bags, backpacks, side carriers, tank bags, top cases and more.
Insure you motorcycle
Like any other motor vehicle in Quebec, you must insure your motorcycle. Basic coverage for physical and bodily damage that your vehicle may cause to others is mandatory. You can also add other main coverages or optional protections depending on how much coverage you need.
What motorcycle coverages are available?
Basic coverages:
Mandatory liability coverage:
If you’ve just bought a new motorcycle, an important first step is taking out legally required liability insurance from a minimum of $1,000,000 to a maximum of $2,000,000. This insurance covers losses, such as bodily injury or physical damage, caused by your vehicle.
This proof of insurance must be kept in your vehicle, as it can be requested at any time by a police officer or provincial agent.
All perils:
Covers all types of losses that can cause damage to your motorcycle and to equipment and accessories.
Collision or upset:
Covers damage caused by impact with another vehicle or if your car flips over. Also covers damage to equipment and accessories and includes vehicle breakdown.
Specified perils:
This coverage is more limited to specific risks such as theft and fire.
Optional coverages:
There are additional coverages you can take out that offer extra protection in the event of a claim. You can add endorsements to your basic motorcyle insurance policy, such as:
Waiver of depreciation:
In the event of a total loss claim, this endorsement offers replacement value if your new motorcycle is stolen or damaged beyond repair, depending on the coverage you choose (2, 3 or 4 years).
Roadside assistance:
Another endorsement you can add to cover breakdowns, fuel delivery, boosts and even towing expenses if you’re unable to drive your vehicle due to a covered loss.
Personal effects:
You can also protect your personal belongings transported on your motorcycle in the event of a claim by adding this special endorsement.
